Friendship Survival Guide, the collaborative album by the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson and his close friend Adam Wiltzie, is out now.
Drawn from studio sessions recorded between 2013 and 2017, the album brings together a series of orchestral psychedelic-drone compositions created during their decade-long friendship and creative partnership. The sessions took place around Jóhannsson’s work on The Theory of Everything and Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival.
Following Jóhannsson’s death in 2018, the recordings remained unfinished for years. With the blessing of Jóhannsson’s family, Wiltzie eventually returned to the material and completed the album as a tribute to his friend and their work together.
“Our friendship is the story here,” says Wiltzie. “Jóhann is gone, but this work we created together lives on, and it’s incredible.”
