Sven Helbig’s Requiem A is released today, May 8, on Deutsche Grammophon, to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The nine-part work blends traditional liturgical texts with new ones written by Helbig. The title’s “A” stands for Anfang - German for “beginning” - reflecting themes of renewal and reconciliation. Key motifs such as “setting off” (Aufbruch), “ashes” (Asche), and “breathing” (Atmen) guide the work’s narrative.
The world premiere took place on February 9, 2025, at Dresden’s Kreuzkirche, featuring Sven Helbig’s live electronics, the Staatskapelle Dresden, and the Dresdner Kreuzchor under the baton of Martin Lehmann. Bass René Pape performed as the soloist. The performance also included live visuals by Icelandic film artist Máni M. Sigfusson.
Requiem A will be performed today at Vienna’s annual memorial event at Heldenplatz by the Wiener Symphoniker and the Dresdner Kreuzchor. A recording of the premiere will stream at 8PM CEST on STAGE+, the album is available to purchase, download, and stream here.
