Adam Wiltzie has announced Friendship Survival Guide, a collaborative album completed with the late composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, arriving on 18 September via Deutsche Grammophon. The first single, White Gloves & Turtlenecks, is out now.
The album stems from recording sessions the pair began between 2013 and 2017 while working together on the scores for The Theory of Everything and Arrival. After revisiting the recordings with the blessing of Jóhannsson's family, Wiltzie completed the project with additional contributions from Tim Hecker, Bryan Senti, the late producer Steve Albini, and longtime engineer Francesco Donadello.
Friendship Survival Guide combines orchestral textures, tape loops and ambient drone, drawing on material originally recorded by Wiltzie and Jóhannsson more than a decade ago. Speaking about the project, Wiltzie describes the album as a testament to their friendship, saying that while Jóhannsson is gone, "this artifact we created together is alive."
The release will be accompanied by a three-part short film directed by Jonas Govaerts. Deutsche Grammophon will also mark the tenth anniversary of Jóhann Jóhannsson's Orphée with a crystal-clear vinyl reissue, available on 16 October.
